The Australian Institute of Building (AIB), which represents thousands of Chartered Builders in Australia, today gave its full backing to the Federal Governments announcement of $5.24 million for a new suicide prevention initiative to be implemented on construction sites across Australia.
We are fully supportive of this announcement, and efforts by Federal Government to reduce the horrendous toll from suicide on construction workers, said Robert Hunt, AIB Chief Executive Officer.
The fact that construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work is a shocking statistic.
We encourage any construction worker who is suffering mental distress, however mildly, to get involved with the Mates in Construction program. We also encourage others to be involved to provide mateship, support and mentoring.
Through a variety of events for professional builders, AIB tries to play its role to build morale and support networks in the construction industry.
AIB is ready to liaise with the Government to discuss how we may be able to assist with this very worthwhile program, Mr Hunt said.
