Can I firstly take this opportunity to pass on our very best wishes to those who are suffering from the devastating effects of COVID-19. I don’t think anyone had ever envisaged the breadth of challenges and heartache the virus has had both in Australia and indeed people affected right around the globe.
Notwithstanding the damage to businesses through things such as supply issues and project cancellations, our thoughts continue to be with those who have either contracted the disease, or those who may have lost a loved one.
The Australian Institute of Building in concert with the Australian Construction Industry Forum (ACIF) continues to post on our website under the Latest News section as well on the Socials, numerous and important updates from government and other allied bodies. I encourage you to keep abreast of these as it almost appears that some days, these are updated hourly.
We were pleased to learn that the NSW Government have approved (at this stage) longer, allowable working hours/days for building sites. This will hopefully minimise contact between workers and allow for builders to be able to get on with the job and keep the industry ticking along. It appears that Victoria has followed this lead as well.
We have received many enquiries from members and non-members about our Professional Excellence Awards asking what our plans are given that (for now) holding an event to celebrate individual achievements is all but banned right across Australia.
Our intent (at this stage I should point out) is to hold most of these prestigious events around the October/November period. You will appreciate, we are negotiating with venues and the like around these changes and should be in a position to announce some changes shortly. Equally, if the issues around COVID-19 continue to escalate or change direction and we are directed by Government, then these plans will most certainly change.
Finally this week, can I remind you that your membership for 2020/2021 is now due for renewal. I am eminently aware that for some this may be a difficult time, however, it is (with respect) also important to remind you that in order for us to continue to advocate on your behalf to government as well as undertake a myriad of other initiatives, we certainly do rely on your support to ensure that our small, yet extremely dedicated staff can continue to work.
We look forward to engaging with you for another year.
Take care and stay safe.
