With growing interest in the Overseas Chapter and the need to service our overseas members, the National Council has appointed Immediate Past National Vice President Graham Teede to assist Norman Faifer, Immediate Past National President and President of the Overseas Chapter in raising the profile of the AIB within the international space.
Our overseas members are spread throughout the UK, USA and Canada, Singapore, Macau, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Dubai, UAE and South Africa. So if you have a colleague working overseas, we encourage you to promote the AIB to them and to consider an AIB Membership. Details are easily found at www.aib.org.au/membership
Continuing the AIB’s interest in South Africa where we have had an MoU with the University of Pretoria in place since 2015, Graham will shortly be formalising an MoU with the University of Cape Town. This follows on from meetings in 2013 and in late 2017 – both UP and UCT are highly respected universities delivering the Construction Economics and Management Degrees. There are also a number of opportunities for the AIB’s Young Builders Alliance in joining and sharing information with overseas student members – this of course can lead to lifelong friendships and other opportunities.
Both Norman and Graham are having ongoing discussions with one other University and the Organisation that is responsible for the registration of all Building Professionals in South Africa. Interestingly, this is enacted by an Act of Parliament and the applicable Legislation. We have also recently joined with a Professional News provider in Johannesburg known as “The Hard Hat Professional“. The AIB will jointly share news and articles of interest in our respective eNews.
With planning for the 2019 Constructing Our World Conference now well underway, the increased profile of the Overseas Chapter may be invaluable in attracting guests and speakers from around the world.
The SA Professional Excellence Awards were held last Friday 4 May and were a huge success! Congratulations to all the winners and a special mention to Paul Melville from Hansen Yunken who received the 2018 SA Building Professional of the Year. Photos from the night can be seen here.
